Justin "NELLY" Nelson's Bio
Justin Nelson is a professional power skating /skills coach and he has worked with players from the mite to professional level. When teaching power skating he demonstrates how agility, balance, power, and stride each play an important role in being a strong skater. Justin left high school in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa to play junior hockey in leagues such as The MNJHL, the IJHL, the EJHL, and in 2004 attended training camp for the Quad City Mallards (UHL).
In addition to hockey, Justin holds an associate degree in Criminal Justice. While attaining this degree, Justin also completed an internship with The Davenport Police Department. After graduating he became the hockey director in Cedar Rapids, where he spent two years. After two years in Cedar Rapids he took an opportunity to be the hockey director in the Quad Cities, where he spent a lot of time rebuilding the youth and adult hockey program, sharing his passion for the game with the entire Quad Cities hockey community.
Justin was currently the on-ice coordinator for the OneGoal program that is currently taking place at the Quad City Sports Center. The OneGoal program at the Quad City Sports Center is one of the top introductory programs in the United States. The program started in April of 2007 and has been moving forward with success to date. The program has seen over 800 kids from age 3 - 8 that are just beginning to learn the game of hockey. These players are also participating in a new OneGoal program which is OneGoal Cross Ice. This program is where players that have been involved in the One Goal Program for two or more sessions participate in a game like atmosphere of 3 on 3. During the summer of 2010 Justin will be traveling the United States training players of all ages and skill levels. The curriculum he will be demonstrating comes from one of the top hockey schools in the country, Pro-Ambitions. "The curriculum is great because it gets players ready for the upcoming season. Players have to compete to be successful. Nothing is given to anyone; you work for what you get. We work on individual skills to real game situations, I demand hard work and in return comes success" states Justin. Justin is very excited to be Head Instructor for Pro-Ambitions and looks forward to working with Jeff Serowick who has a lot of hockey experience both playing in the NHL and coaching. Currently Justin has established a good reputation in the Illinois area, and at Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills, IL. Justin offers powerskating once a week at Glacier. This clinic is very popular and is offered on Tuesdays from 6:10pm - 7:10pm. During this clinic Justin works strictly on skating. Focus during this clinic is acceleration, agility, balance, and power. Another clinic that Justin also offers is new to the arena and is called Small Group Training (SGT). During these sessions there will be Justin and 2 - 3 other coaches on the ice and they will work in separate groups with no more than 10 kids in each group. In these small groups coaches will work on stickhandling, passing, shooting, and skating (individual skills). These clinics take place on Thursdays at Glacier Ice Arena from 4:00pm - 4:50pm. Justin is proud to announce that he has been offered the position as a skills coach for the Chicago Force Jr. A Organization (CSHL). Justin will be working with Co Coaches Dick Glass and Mark Hammersmith to work on player development. Justin will bring a wealth of knowledge to the Force where Justin spends a lot of time with NHL skills coaches in the summer preparing for the future. Justin also runs powerskating clinics for St. Viator High School Organization.
Some of the NHL skills coaches that Justin has a relationship are with Bessa (Pittsburgh Penguins), Rick Ferroni (Buffalo Sabres), and Paul Lawson (Montreal Canadiens). Former NHL players that Justin currently does work with are Steve Dubinsky, and Jeff Serowick.
Justin offers private lessons for individuals focusing on their strengths and correcting their weaknesses. He works with players on a one on one basis to develop their skills and help them succeed to the next level. During the off season, Justin spends his time coaching and instructing AAA, Junior Players to prepare them for the junior or college level.
